The 2007 winners of the Darlene J. and Robert L. Walker Scholarship were announced in September. Each student received $7,400 toward the 2007-2008 academic year. They are:

Elisabeth Anne Carlson
Chicago-Kent College of Law, Class of 2009
Associated with Lincoln Lodge No. 210 - Lincoln, IL
and St. Elmo Lodge No. 769 - St. Elmo, IL

By studying law, I hope to be able to use the power that comes from the judicial process to help others. The judicial process, and the law itself, are concrete tools to work towards justice and truth and upon graduating I hope to work in international or immigration law.

Justin Cox
Saint Louis University School of Law, Class of 2008
Associated with Collinsville Lodge No. 712 - Collinsville, IL

I plan on working for a law firm in the St. Louis area and sitting for either the Illinois or Missouri bar (depending on where I work). I am pursuing the Health Law Certificate at SLU, so I may be going on to the health law field after graduation. I currently work for SimmonsCooper LLC in East Alton, IL so that may also be an option.

Melanie Davis
Chicago-Kent College of Law, Class of 2010

I plan to pursue criminal law and become a defendant's attorney. My hope is to provide my future clients with competent representation that they can afford. I plan to serve communities on the south side of the city of Chicago.

Rex Gradeless
Saint Louis University School of Law, Class of 2009
Member of Webster Groves Lodge No. 84 – Webster Groves, MO

After graduating, I intend to pursue a job where I can write legislation that protects the rights of those less fortunate and provides a better quality of life for as many people as possible. Law school has given me some of the necessary skills I need to serve people who need help the most. I look forward to a career in public service.

Marianna Mancusi-Ungaro
University of Chicago Law School, Class of 2009
Associated with Widow’s Son No. 66 AF&AM – Branford, CT

I am enthusiastic about using my law degree some day in an effort to improve public schools in the United States. Last summer, I worked in Santiago, Chile for an independent think tank researching comparative judicial systems and learning about Chilean public policies, including education reform. I hope to continue pursuing my evolving policy interests throughout the rest of law school and eventually as an attorney.

Charmaine Stanislaw
Loyola University Chicago School of Law, Class of 2009

After law school, I intend to enter the public interest field of law. I hope to get a job at a non-profit organization to promote the public interest in areas of civil rights and government accountability, or a direct service organization where I can use my legal education to represent those people or groups of people who could not otherwise afford legal counsel. I envision my legal career as a very useful application of the skills I am learning to help people in practical, efficient ways.

Congratulations to these outstanding law students, and thank you to all of this year's applicants.
